The Compasses Inn FORDINGBRIDGE

The Compasses Inn, 4 EAST END, FORDINGBRIDGE, SP6 3HQ

Rooms from £90

The Compasses Inn at Damerham has been an Inn for over 400 years. At one time it was virtually self sufficient with its own brewery coach house dairy well and butchery. The old brew tower is still standing and whilst no longer in use we are keen to see it renovated one day.The Compasses has seen many changes over the centuries. Most areas have been completely modernised and refurbished with great care taken to retain the character and atmosphere of this traditional inn. Some things have not changed. You are always assured of a warm friendly welcome whatever the time of year. Relax in the large gardens overlooking superb views of the surrounding countryside in the spring and summer. During the colder months warm yourself by open fires whether in the traditional Public Bar with scenes of bygone village life or in the delightfully decorated Lounge Bar and Dining areas. The surrounding countryside - transferred from Wiltshire in 1895 - is still unspoiled a conservation area of Ancient Wessex. Steeped in history the village of Damerham dates back to 900AD and its Norman Church of St. George across the fields occupies a splendid hilltop site. The Manor was one of the most important estates in South Wiltshire belonging to Glastonbury Abbey for nearly six hundred years and the manorial court continued to be held at The Compasses until 1920. Overlooking the cricket green. The Compasses nestles in the heart of the village acting as a focal point for social activity. Also ideal for local Horse Racing Courses for Newbury and Salisbury.
