Historical fort at the mouth of the River Orwell, perched on Landguard Point next both to Britain's Largest Container Port and a Special Site of Scientific Interest (Landguard Nature Reserve). The original fortifications date back to 1540 and in 1667 Captain Nathaniel Darrell successfully commanded the repulsion of an attempted Dutch invasion at the site. Throughout the intervening centuries additional changes were made to reflect the military history of the time, all of which can still be seen at the present fort. This beautifully preserved ancient monument will bring history alive and provides stunning views across Harwich Harbour, helping you to imagine what it would have been like to defend the mouth of the river throughout history. A visit to the Landguard Fort will include a free audio guide and groups may book a guide in advance. There is also the option of taking an outer battery tour on Sundays and various additional dates throughout the year. In 2011 the fort will be open from Saturday 2nd April until Sunday 30th October. From June to September opening hours will be from 10am to 6pm, with last admissions at 5pm. In April, May and October the fort will open between 10am to 5pm with last admissions at 4pm.
