The Needles Battery Freshwater

Description of The Needles Battery Freshwater

Overlooking the Needles with fantastic views out to sea and across to the mainland. The Old Battery is a fort built in 1862 along with a later Victorian fort and was uses in both WW1 and WW2. An narrow underground tunnel from the parade ground takes you to an opening where a searchlight once stood and you can look down on the Needles and have sympathy for those that manned the light in bad weather. There is a tea room at the top of an old observation tower - a great place to eat cake and look out to sea, rather like being on the bridge of a ship. The New Battery has a fascinating exhibition on the secret Black Knight rocket and the satellite that Britain put up in space (it is still there) during the Cold War that was launched from the Australian desert. The rockets were tested at the Needles in secret, though most people roundabout seemed to know! Visit the National Trust website for opening times and more information.

Who does The Needles Battery Freshwater appeals to?

You do need to be able to climb stairs and there are steep slopes, though you could take the open top bus which would enable you to see the views without the walking. It is possible for Blue Badge holders to park outside the Old Battery, but this must be arranged in advance.

Why Visit The Needles Battery Freshwater?

The views alone are stunning on a sunny day. The New Battery exhibition is fascinating and educational. The Old Battery tea room is a great place afternoon tea or a light lunch, it is so different from the norm as the main room has high stools and binoculars so you can study passing ships.
