The Chantry, is the elegant 18th century former home of one of the UK's greatest scientists, Dr Edward Jenner (1749-1823), who has saved more lives than anyone else ever. In 1796 from his home, he pioneered vaccination. He was also a 'polymath' interested in natural history, medicine, ballooning and horticulture. Many of his discoveries we now take for granted such as hedgehog hibernation; nesting habits of cuckoos; and of course vaccination. Many of us owe our lives to his hard work. Explore his beautiful home and gardens, including his vinery (he collected cuttings from Hampton Court Palace); the thatched 'Temple of Vaccinia' described as the cornerstone of the public health system after he gave out free vaccinations to the public; and the Old Cyder House tea room and shop. He is buried inside the adjacent 13th church. One minute walk to Berkeley Castle through the churchyard (we offer a Joint Ticket), making 'Historic Berkeley' a 'must' day out for all the family. Just off Jns 13/14 M5; follow brown signs to A38 Berkeley. Free on-site parking. Open year-round for groups by appointment; open seasonally to the public, check website for information and events programme.
