M6 or A1M then take A69 - Road: 2 miles off A69 about midway between Brampton and Haltwhistle. Beware! There are a number of turns signposted Gilsland. Be sure to take the turn signed DENTON GILSLAND 2 miles SPADEADAM and a brown tourist sign for BIRDOSWALD. Cross the railway at a level crossing. At the village outskirts follow the road as it swings to the left past a yellow truck garage cross bridge over the River Irthing. 1st left signed Birdoswald.
