Gilbert White's House & Garden and The Oates Collection is situated at the heart of the pretty Hampshire village of Selborne. Explore the charming house, set in 25 acres of restored gardens and ancient parkland, once home to Rev.Gilbert White, 18th century naturalist, who is celebrated as the first ecologist and author of the world famous The Natural History of Selborne. See the exciting new galleries celebrating the life of Antarctic Hero Captain Lawrence Oates, who accompanied Scott on the epic journey to the South Pole (1911-12). 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Oates' death, and he is best remembered for sacrifcing his life in the hope of saving his his comrades by leaving the tent in a blizzard with the last words ‘I am just going outside and may be some time.’ Learn about the fascinating travels of Frank Oates, a 19th century explorer who was one of the first Europeans to journey to Africa and the Americas. See his collection of birds, animals and African weapons. With an award-winning Tea Parlour, well-stocked Gift Shop & plant sales, we have all you need for an interesting and relaxing visit.
