The Spice Lounge is located on the main High Street in the attractive Cotswold town of Burford. BurfordBurford is situated in north Oxfordshire, about twenty miles north of Oxford. It is often referred to as the gateway to the Cotswolds. An attractive old Cotswold town, its High Street slopes down to River Windrush, crossed by a three arched medieval bridge. The footpath from the bridge takes you on a pleasant walk along the banks of the River Windrush. The site was fortified in Anglo-Saxon times – the name Burford means “Ford by a fortified place” In the Domesday book, Burford was an agricultural village but that changed when a charter was granted establishing a merchant guild, allowing burghers to hold their own markets. In the eighteenth century Burford was a flourishing commercial centre. Its origins were in the wool trade as well as leather tanning and working, which had flourished in the town sine the 12th century. Burford was an important coaching centre, with over 40 coaches a day passing through stopping at one of the many inns. There was disappointment when the railways passed Burford by and were routed through nearby Charlbury. However this undoubtedly helped to preserve the town’s charm. Since 2001 Burford has been twinned with the town of Potenza Picena in the Marche region of Italy. Burford’s fortunes are now based on the visitors that come to shop in the town and visit the attractive surrounding countryside.
