Sligo Places of Interest - 1. Lough Talt : Lough Talt is a picturesque lake located in the foothills of the Ox Mountains. The R294 Ballina – Tubbercurry road runs right along the north east shoreline, making it easily accessible. Boats can be hired locally from the Lough Talt Inn or can be launched from the jetty just off the road. The trout here range from ¼ - ¾ lbs with the occasional pounder. Lough Talt is an ideal location for the young inexperienced angler. 2. Garavogue: Lough Gill and River Bonet: Lough Gill is a large lake, nearly 6 ½ miles long and 2 ½ miles wide, and holds brown trout and salmon. It gets a big run of spring salmon and anglers are out from opening day. Few loughs have a reputation for having salmon as the predominant species and his is one of them. Lough Gill also holds a stock of gold brown trout averaging 1lb, with anglers concentrating fishing efforts on the mayfly season. 3. Carrowmore Megalithic Site: This is the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland and is also among the country’s oldest. Over 60 tombs have been located by archaeologists – the oldest pre-date Newgrange by some 700 years. A restored cottage houses a small exhibition relating to the site. 4. Carrowkeel Passage Tombs: Carrowkeel is a beautifully situated megalithic hill top passage tomb cemetery, it consists of 14 passage cairns. 5. Markree Castle: For 350 years, the Cooper family have been living in this mighty castle in county Sligo in Ireland, which is quite unique. The Castle lies in the romantic landscape where the poet Yeats found his inspiration, north of awe-inspiring Connemara and south of the beautiful Donegal coast, with the impressive cliffs of Bunglass and Magho. 6. Sligo Folk Park: This is a place, which is great fun for young and old – Children can discover how their great-grandparents used to live and those who are still young at heart can take trip down memory lane to rediscover how life used to be in the old days. 7. The Lissadell House: Lissadell is famous as the childhood home of Constance Markievicz, her sister Eva Gore Booth and her brother Josslyn Gore Booth. Constance was one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, and was the first woman to be elected to Dail Eireann). Eva was a poet of distinction and an active suffragist, clashing with the young Winston Churchill over barmaids' rights in 1908. Josslyn created at Lissadell one of the premier horticultural estates in Europe. This horticultural enterprise has now been recreated at Lissadell. Sligo born poet W. B. Yeats was friendly with the Gore Booth sisters and stayed at Lissadell in 1893 and 1894. He immortalised Lissadell and the Gore Booth sisters in his poetry. 8. Museum of Ireland- Country Life. Located in Turlough Park, Castlebar, this modern museum is home to the national collection of objects representing the traditional way of life in Ireland since 1850. It celebrates the 10th anniversary of its opening in September 2011. 9. Standhill Surf School: Strandhill Surf School is a new and exciting place to learn to surf or improve your surfing skills. Based at Strandhill beach, with consistent waves and lively village surroundings, the school hold lessons daily and for all ages. 35 minute drive from our base at Edenvilla. 10. Sligo Spur Walks: Featured historical and nature walks are available at Lough Talt, Cloonacool, Bellaghy, Lavagh, Skreen, Coolaney, Tubbercurry, Aclare, Curry and Moylough. Ceide Fields: Beneath the wild boglands of North Mayo lies Ceide Fields, the most extensive stone age monument in the world; field systems, dwelling areas and megalithic tombs of 5,000 years ago. In addition, the wild flora of the bog is of international importance and is bounded by some of the most spectacular rock formations and cliffs in Ireland. 12. Boyle Cistercian Abbey: The Abbey Church was consecrated in 1220. It is of Romanesque and Gothic design and despite being plundered on a number of occasions; its architectural splendour makes it one of the finest remaining examples of medieval art. A restored gatehouse of 16th / 17th century houses an exhibition. Conducted tours of the Abbey and grounds are available. 13. King House, Boyle: King House is a magnificently restored Georgian Mansion located in Boyle. It was built in the early 1700’s for Sir Henry King, whose family were one of the most powerful and wealthy in Ireland. King House is suitable for all ages and offers an excellent experience for everyone including coach tours, schools, colleges, historical societies, active retirement associations, etc. 14. Woodlands Equestrian Centre, Tubbercurry - Horse Ridin\ Jumping: A family run equestrian centre that caters for small groups and private tuition dressage, show jumping and basic riding skills. The centre specialises in Connemara ponies and Irish Draught Horses. It consists of a large indoor school, 2 sand arenas, Dressage Shows and displays. Festivals Tubbercurry boasts one of the most popular and successful festivals in the West of Ireland; the Summer School of Irish traditional music. This event attracts large numbers of performing artists and cultural tourists from all over the world. There is also an annual Fair Day held in Tubbercurry every August. There is usually a high attendance for this with many people coming from abroad. During this day, a stall can be hired out on the main square, where people sell goods. The square is closed to traffic along with the town's main street.
