The Borrowdale Hotel - where tradition & fine Lakeland hospitality is the key The Borrowdale Hotel is situated in the heart of the Borrowdale Valley and has a backdrop of crystal clear rivers and ancient woodland a quiet oasis that has offered the finest Lakeland hospitality since 1866. Few places can boast such a location set at the foot of Shepherds Cragg and only a 5 minute meander to Derwentwater. The pretty Borrowdale Valley has been a favourite with visitors since the railway first reached Keswick in 1865. A year later in 1866 the Borrowdale Hotel was built (co-incidentally it was also the year that the local Miss Beatrix Potter was born!). Today you can still enjoy the same level of traditional hospitality but this Lakeland slate hotel with its 40 en-suite bedrooms has been completely updated with a refurbishment that has remained sympathetic to its character. Personality and charm still pervade like the 41 original room bells that hang in the hall and the veranda that commemorates Queen Victoria s 60th Jubilee but there is also a bright conservatory with picture postcard views and cosy lounges with real fires and the chime of the grandfather clock. Enjoy traditional silver service at its best in the dining room which also boasts a unique wine tasting cellar the perfect place to marry wine and fine food under the expert guidance of a French Head Chef and a General Manager who is also one of only 25 Master Sommeliers in Europe. From peace and tranquillity to action and adventure there s plenty to do in Keswick and the surrounding area like hiking biking canoeing and climbing. In contrast you can enjoy more sedentary past times like a stroll along crystal clear rivers cruising on Derwentwater and admiring the views across to the Catbell Mountains made famous in Beatrix Potter s Tales of Miss Tigglywinkle. A perfect marriage of food and wine at The Borrowdale The menu at the Borrowdale hotel is prepared using the finest fresh ingredients and includes a traditional roast carvery from a silver serving trolley. Dine in the elegant restaurant attended by courteous friendly staff and afterwards relax in the lounge or bar. At the rear of the dining room is a superb wine tasting cellar where guests can enjoy evening wine tastings from the Master Sommelier several times a week. Inside you will see a large range of wines from all over the world to inspire you ahead of your meal. With a French Head Chef bringing flair to dishes created from local ingredients and a Master Sommelier with years of experience you can enjoy the perfect marriage of food and wine.
