The Original Ship was built of mainly ship timber brought from the old port of New Romney. The first recorded keeper is one Thomas Banne who is described as an ostler of the parish of Romney. The inn is mentioned in the will of Samuel Dunstare in1579. br / br / In 1662 it is recorded that the inn underwent extensive alteration the thatch wattle and daub was removed in part and replaced with tiles and bricks. The present facade was erected in 1728. At the height of the coaching era of the mid to late eighteenth century The Ship was an established coach halt being situated on the main Rye to Dover route and is mentioned as a compulsory stop in the timetable of 1802. More recently In the 20th century the cellar was also used as a public air-raid shelter in World War II. br / br / br / br / The Newly Refurbished En Suite rooms are comfortably furnished and pleasantly decorated some rooms are small with low doors which you would expect from a 500 year old buliding. Ashford Kent - Road: Follow signs to B2070 Hastings at the Brenzett roundabout take the first left and follow into New Romney High Street. We are situated on the right just after the petrol station on the right before the traffic lights. br/ br/ Hastings - Road: Take the 1st left onto A259/White Rock Rd. Turn left at A259/The Bourne (for about 8 miles). Turn left at A259/Rectory Ln. Turn right at A259/Tanyard Ln. Turn right to stay on A259. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto A259/New Rd (for about 5 miles). Turn left to stay on A259 (signs for Dover/Brookland/Folkestone/A259. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit and stay on A259 heading to Folkestone/Hythe/New Romney. We are on the right.
