Further on can be found the Isle of Portland famous for its stone (once used to build St Paul s Cathedral among many of the other famous buildings throughout the country). br / br / br / br / To the west there are many picturesque villages the prettiest of which is probably Abbotsbury with its swanery Tythe Barn and sub tropical gardens. The towns Chesil Beach runs from Portland 18 miles west along the coast towards Bridport. Access between Portland and Abbotsbury can only be gained by crossing the Fleet (a stretch of tidal water home to many types of birds and sea life).
