Clare Castle was home to one of the richest women in England in 1350- Elizabeth De Burgh. In fact one of the crown jewels was found nearby when the Victorian railway was being built. The Bell Hotel itself dates back to at least 1570 when it was known as The Green Dragon. Some of the beams are even older as they were taken from Clare Priory. Stansted Airport - Road: Follow the A120 towards Colchester then take the A131 towards Sudbury. After around 3 miles turn left onto A1017 towards Haverhill. Follow the road for 12 miles and then turn right onto A1092 towards Clare. You will see The Bell Hotel ahead of you on the corner of the Cavendish (Sudbury) Road.
