The area was christened Staffordshire s Little Switzerland by the railway company in the late 1800 s in an attempt to attract tourists. br / br / br / br / This led to the Earl of Shrewsbury opening the garden s at Alton Towers to visitors that nowadays hosts a world famous theme park and Resort. br / br / br / br / It was around that time that the Railway Hotel as it was then seems to have been built with it first being recorded in the census of 1881 which would have coincided with the increase in tourism. br / br / br / br / Nowadays the railway is a tourist attraction in itself attracting many thousands of people to its steam train themed days.
