Boughton House
Boughton House Kettering has been the Northamptonshire home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry and their Montagu ancestors since 1528. The modest medieval buildings were transformed under their Stewardship into one of the great houses of Europe. The special attraction of Boughton lies in the harmonious blending of the superb collections of paintings, furniture, tapestries, needlework, carpets, porcelain, arms and silver. All of which are contemporary with the setting of fine beauty with a magical atmosphere to match, just as the artists, craftsmen and the discriminating collectors of the Montagu family over the generations intended. Recent generations have undertaken a major restoration Programme in the parkland, beginning almost thirty years ago when the present Duke’s father had the Broadwater re-dug. It is a Programme that will take a further decade or more to complete, and many more thereafter to mature, but one day future generations will benefit in the way we do now from what our forebears started over 300 years ago. Hundreds of avenue trees have been replanted; whilst fences, walls and gates have being renewed. The canalised River Ise and its water features have been restored, the Mount uncovered so it once again rises some 8 metres in height to provide commanding views of the revitalised landscape and the new 21st century feature, Orpheus.
