Tavistock is an ancient market town. It has a variety of independant boutiques, gift shops and cafes/restaurants, not forgetting the renowned pannier market, which is open Tuesday - Saturday. Lovely walks along the River Tavy or the canal which both flow through this town. See Betsy Grimbals tower and other remains of the 13th century Benedictine abbey. Tavistock is the birthplace in 1542 of Sir Francis Drake.
